Chapter 91 — Prompt Engineer Roadmap

📖 Definition

A prompt engineer designs, tests, and maintains the instructions that drive a model — and proves the changes worked with evaluations. The job is 20% writing prompts and 80% measuring them.

🔍 Market Reality — Read This Honestly

The standalone "prompt engineer" title is shrinking, not growing. The work is being absorbed into AI engineer, applied AI, solutions engineer, AI QA, and AI content roles.

That does not make the skill worthless — it makes it a specialism inside another role. Treat this chapter as the fastest on-ramp into AI work, then continue into the AI Engineer roadmap (chapter 89) or the FDE roadmap (chapter 92).

It is also the most accessible entry point in AI: open to writers, domain experts, testers, and analysts, not only developers.

This is the whole job. Opinions about prompts are worthless without measurement.

A prompt in a string literal inside a route handler cannot be rolled back or attributed. A prompt as a versioned object can.

Logging version is what lets you attribute a quality regression to a specific edit. Logging cache_read_input_tokens is what proves your caching actually works — if it is zero across repeated calls, something volatile crept into the prefix.

🌍 Real-World Uses

  • Extraction and classification — cheap model plus enum schema in front of an expensive one.
  • Brand voice — few-shot examples pin tone better than adjectives ever will.
  • Internal tooling prompts — code review, release notes, ticket summarisation.
  • Model migrations — re-baselining prompts written for an older model, which routinely regress on a newer one.

🎯 Likely Interview Questions

  1. How do you know your new prompt is better and not just different? — Fixed golden set, one variable changed, rubric applied blind, and a sample large enough that the gap is not noise.
  2. How do you get reliable JSON out of a model? — Structured outputs with a JSON schema, validated server-side anyway. Not a prose plea to "reply only in JSON".
  3. Zero-shot or few-shot? — Zero-shot for tasks the model already knows; few-shot when format or tone is easier to demonstrate than to describe.
  4. Where do you put dynamic content, and why? — After the stable prefix, so prompt caching still hits.
  5. A prompt that worked last quarter regressed after a model upgrade. Why? — Prompts are per-model artefacts. Emphasis and workarounds written for an older model over-apply on a newer one. Re-baseline and delete dated scaffolding.
  6. How do you stop the model following instructions embedded in user data? — Tag the data, declare it untrusted, keep authority in the system prompt, validate output, and never let model output alone trigger a privileged action.
  7. This role may not exist as a title in two years. What then? — The honest answer, and the one that lands: evaluation and retrieval skills transfer straight into AI engineering, which is where you are heading.
